Can't believe it, but 2010 has arrived. What does 2010 hold for the fundraising professional? What are the challenges? What will be the surprises?
I'm involved in a major campaign to raise funds for an innovative model for long-term health care that replaces the traditional hospital-style nursing facility. The challenge I face is educating a community to the benefits of making the investment to change the way we see elder care provided. Our elders deserve a different environment that honors and respects the wisdom and life experiences they have to share. There are several models that bring about this change. I find hope and encouragement in the challenges this new style of nursing home brings. And,2010 promises to be transformational, that should be no suprise.

- I grew up on a small dairy farm in central Illinois where attending to farm chores morning and evening help me understand the importance hard work - and long hours! I migrated East in 1974 for college and stayed in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. My first fundraising memory was a 24 hour basketball event in high school - I played all 24 hours! Our sponsors pledged a certain amount per point as the points racked up. We raised enough money to subsidize a Christian leadership training workshop with Campus Crusade for Christ. I have enjoyed the challenges fundraising presents: finding the interest of a donor and matching it with the mission and vision of the organization. I live in Harrisonburg with my wife, Sylvia. Our two daughters both live in Harrisonburg after they have meandered all over the world.
